Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi gave a positive assessment of Cairo's diplomatic efforts on Libya, the Kremlin's press service reports.

It is noted that the conversation was held on the initiative of the Egyptian side.

"The situation in Libya was discussed in detail. El-Sisi informed about the content of the talks held on June 6 in Cairo with the President of the House of Representatives Aguila Saleh and the commander of the Libyan National Army (Khalifa) Haftar, who proposed steps for a political settlement of the Libyan crisis. The Russian side gave a positive assessment of Egypt's diplomatic efforts. The two sides confirmed their mutual intention to continue coordination in order to ensure an early cessation of hostilities and launch inter - Libyan talks under the auspices of the UN," the statement reads.

During the telephone conversation, issues of the strategic partnership were also discussed.

"In addition, they discussed topical issues of further development of the Russian-Egyptian strategic partnership, including cooperation in the field of industry, nuclear energy, as well as cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic," the message reads.

The initiative to overcome the crisis in Libya, which was announced after el-Sisi's talks with Haftar and Saleh in Cairo on June 6, provides for a complete cease-fire between the parties from 06:00 on June 8, the continuation of negotiations of the Joint Military Committee in Geneva under the patronage of the UN, and the gradual unification of the institutions of power to establish a full-fledged life of the country. This initiative was rejected by the authorities in Tripoli. In particular, Khaled al-Mishri, head of the Supreme State Council (acting in consultation with the Government of National Accord), said that any peace initiative that is not based on the Skhirat political agreement would be rejected.
