Russia is the only country that has managed to eliminate terrorist formations, otherwise, the current terrible events in Afghanistan could have been in Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the second stage of the United Russia party congress.
"Russia is actually the only country that has been able to defeat major terrorist formations, liquidate the bandit underground. Many thanks to those guys who did this, often at the cost of their own lives," Putin said.
The president recalled that the USSR had its own experience in Afghanistan, and noted that Russia has effective capabilities to provide security and reliably protect citizens and the country from terrorism.
"Let me remind you... in the North Caucasus there were actually hostilities with large gangs of international terrorists, and if we had not defeated them, had not given them a united repulse, if residents of Dagestan, Chechnya and other republics had not risen to fight this evil, the terrible events that are happening today in Afghanistan would have continued in our land," said the president.
