President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to French President Emmanuel Macron expressing his condolences over the terrorist attacks in the republic, the Kremlin press-service says.

“The cynical and brutal crime committed within the church walls is particularly outrageous. We have once again become convinced that terrorists are completely alien to the notion of human morality. Obviously, the fight against international terrorism requires a real unification of efforts of the entire international community”, the telegram notes in particular.

On Thursday morning, a man with a knife attacked people at the Notre Dame Basilica in Nice. Three people died, several people are wounded. A number of media report that the man beheaded a woman. The attacker was quickly detained by law enforcement agencies. He was injured in the process of being apprehended.

This is the second attack in France in the past two weeks. On October 16, Samuel Paty, a history teacher, was beheaded in the commune of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine near Paris. The murder took place at the school where the teacher worked. Earlier, the teacher had showed cartoons of Prophet Mohammed during a class where the theme of speech freedom was discussed. During the national farewell ceremony for the teacher, Macron said that France would continue to defend freedom of speech and would not abandon the cartoons.
