Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the proposal of his counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish an international organization for promotion of the Russian language in the CIS.
Opening an informal CIS summit on Friday, the Russian head of state drew attention to Tokayev's idea to create "an international organization to support and promote the Russian language" under the auspices of the Commonwealth. "We are very grateful to President Tokayev for this, I think it is important for everyone, bearing in mind that the Russian language is certainly a language of interstate communication," Putin said.
The Russian president believes that the implementation of this idea "has a practical dimension, bearing in mind that millions of CIS citizens in Russia, who help both Russia in the implementation of development plans and themselves earn the necessary funds to support their families."
"Of course, we support Kazakhstan's proposal and on our part we will do our best to implement as soon as possible, especially taking into account that 2023 will be declared the Year of Russian as the language of interstate communication in the CIS," said the Russian president.
The CIS has declared this year the Year of Folk Arts and Cultural Heritage, while 2023 will be the Year of the Russian language as a language of international communication. CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev said earlier that the Council of Heads of State plans to declare 2024 the Year of Volunteer Movement, and 2025 - the year of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
