Putin to hold meeting with permanent members of Security Council on Friday

03 March 2023

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a traditional operative meeting with the permanent members of the Security Council, his press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

He announced about the event in response to a request to comment on information from social networks that a meeting of the Russian Security Council would be held on March 2, amid the events in the Bryansk region. Peskov stressed that there were no such plans for Thursday, and that the president had scheduled a regular meeting with the permanent members of the Council of the Security Council for Friday.

On March 2, due to the attack of Ukrainian saboteurs in the Bryansk region, the president cancelled his trip to the Stavropol krai and attended the opening of the Year of the Teacher and Mentor via video link from the Kremlin. As Peskov noted, the head of state in Moscow was receiving reports from the Federal Security Service, the defense ministry and Rosgvardia, as well as from the governor of the Bryansk region on the situation in the region. On the same day, Putin gave his assessment of the incident, calling the attack by Ukrainian militants a terrorist attack. As the president stressed, the terrorists infiltrated the border territory and opened fire on civilians.

Putin regularly holds such operational meetings; they are held weekly or less frequently. In February, Putin held three meetings with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council, the last of which, on February 13, was devoted to the results of a number of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's visits to African countries. Also, fighting terrorism, countering natural disasters, and infrastructure development were among the topics of such meetings.

Permanent members of the Security Council include Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov, Presidential Administration Head Anton Vaino, Special Representative of the President on Environmental Protection, Environment and Transport Sergey Ivanov, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin.
