Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, met with Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani to discuss efforts to resolve the Gaza conflict.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry stated that the leaders "addressed the situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, focusing on joint mediation efforts to end the war." Both officials underscored the need for de-escalation in the region.
This discussion occurred amid ongoing consultations in Doha aimed at achieving a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages. The talks, attended by representatives from Israel, the United States, and Egypt, are set to continue on August 16.
On August 9, the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the US called for renewed ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, aiming for a draft agreement based on principles proposed by US President Joe Biden and supported by UN Security Council Resolution 2735. Hamas has urged the mediators to present a concrete plan for implementing the ceasefire and ensuring Israeli compliance.
Despite Hamas's repeated refusal to participate in the Doha talks, US State Department Deputy Press Secretary Vedant Patel confirmed that the mediators have assured Washington that Hamas representatives will be involved in the ongoing consultations.
