Qatar Announces Continued Talks Between Hamas and Israel to Renew Truce

01 December 2023

The Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel are engaged in ongoing negotiations to resume a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, according to the Qatari Foreign Ministry.

"The foreign ministry confirms that negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides continue with the aim of restoring the truce," stated the ministry in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter). It emphasized that Qatar, along with its partners, "is committed to continuing the efforts that led to the humanitarian truce" and will do everything necessary for its resumption.

Meanwhile, the Qatari MFA highlighted that the resumption of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in the initial hours following the truce's conclusion hinders mediation efforts between the conflicting parties. "The ministry underscores that the ongoing bombardment of the Gaza Strip immediately after the truce exacerbates the humanitarian catastrophe and adds complexity to mediation endeavors," the statement emphasized. Qatar's foreign ministry urged the international community to "swiftly intervene and halt the hostilities."

The ministry reaffirmed its condemnation of attacks on civilians, the use of collective punishment, and efforts to forcibly relocate residents in the Gaza Strip. The Qatari foreign ministry called for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave and the unrestricted, continuous delivery of humanitarian aid.

On November 22, Hamas reported reaching an agreement with Israel, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, on a four-day humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, which came into effect on November 24 at 08:00 Moscow time. The agreements envisioned the release of children and women held in the enclave in exchange for the release of children and women from Israeli prisons.

The Israeli side stated its readiness to extend the ceasefire for one day for the release of 10 hostages, as well as to release 30 Palestinian prisoners each. On the morning of December 1, the Israeli army press service informed that Hamas violated the truce in the Gaza Strip and opened fire on Israeli territory, leading to a resumption of hostilities in the enclave. According to the Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip, the victims of Israeli strikes in the first three hours after the ceasefire were 32 Palestinians, with dozens more injured.
