Qatar remains committed to mediating efforts aimed at reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children, separated from their families due to the ongoing conflict, with their relatives. This was stated by Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing.
“Efforts and active engagement with both parties are ongoing,” he said in response to a question from TASS. “As part of this mediation, we are addressing each case individually to ensure that the child or minor is reunited with their relatives as quickly as possible,” he clarified. “We thank both sides for their cooperation,” Al-Ansari added.
Commenting on media reports from last week suggesting that Russia and Ukraine held discussions in Doha regarding the safety of nuclear energy facilities, Al-Ansari emphasized that “Qatar has consistently advocated for resolving all issues stemming from this war through dialogue.” He added, “Qatar supports all peace initiatives aimed at ending this war, whether through direct mediation or by backing international efforts.”
Qatar is playing a key mediating role in facilitating the return of children taken from conflict zones to their families. On November 27 of last year, two Russian children were returned to their homeland with the assistance of Qatar’s embassy in Moscow. On November 28, Russia handed over seven children to Ukraine through Qatar’s diplomatic mission.
In total, with the support of Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, 15 children from 10 families have been reunited with their relatives in Russia, while 87 children from 69 families have been reunited with their families in Ukraine or in third countries.
