Qatar Frees Three Iranian Citizens from Detention

31 August 2023

Qatari authorities have released three Iranian prisoners who previously crossed the border into the emirate's territorial waters, as confirmed by Hamid Dehghani, the Iranian ambassador to Qatar.

"Thanks to the dedicated efforts of my embassy colleagues and the support from Qatari authorities, we have successfully secured the release of three of our fellow countrymen. They were apprehended due to mistakenly entering Qatar's territorial waters. These individuals will be returning to Iran in the upcoming days. Concurrently, negotiations are underway for the release of other detainees," he affirmed, as reported by the ISNA news agency.

On May 16, the Iranian ambassador to Qatar announced that Iran was actively engaged in securing the release of six of its citizens who had been apprehended by Qatar's coast guard. The individuals had unintentionally entered Qatar's territorial waters while engaged in diving activities. The ambassador did not disclose the circumstances or reasons that led to the six divers being located so far from Iran, on the opposite side of the Persian Gulf.
