Qatar has handed over the final draft of an agreement to Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, aiming to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and secure the release of hostages, according to Reuters, citing a source.
On January 11, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed negotiators to travel to Doha for further talks on the release of hostages in Gaza. A day later, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CNN that the parties were “very close” to reaching a ceasefire deal, suggesting it might be finalized before Trump's inauguration on January 20. On Sunday evening, Netanyahu's office reported that he discussed the progress of Gaza negotiations with US President Joe Biden over the phone.
In late November 2023, a week-long humanitarian truce was brokered by Egypt and Qatar in Gaza. During this period, Israel reported the release of 110 hostages. However, the ceasefire collapsed on December 1, 2023, with hostilities resuming in the Palestinian enclave. Despite multiple rounds of consultations in 2024 involving Egypt, Qatar, and the US, the conflicting parties failed to agree on the terms of a deal.
