Qatari and Egyptian Mediation Efforts on Gaza Truce Suspended Following Haniyeh’s Assassination

02 August

Negotiations between Egyptian and Qatari mediators and Israel regarding a truce in the Gaza Strip have been completely suspended following the assassination of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, the EFE agency reports, citing sources from the Egyptian security service.

According to these sources, the suspension of talks is attributed to “anger among the Hamas leadership, both inside and outside the Gaza Strip,” as well as the frustration of the mediators over Haniyeh's death.

On July 28, CIA Director William Burns met in Rome with representatives from Israel, Egypt, and Qatar in an attempt to negotiate a truce in Gaza and facilitate the release of hostages. On the same day, Mossad Intelligence Director David Barnea returned to Israel. The prime minister's office indicated that negotiations would continue in the coming days.

Earlier, on May 31, US President Joe Biden announced a new draft agreement for a phased peace settlement in Gaza. This proposed plan includes a cease-fire and the release of Israeli citizens in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinians from Israeli jails.
