Terrorist groups are expanding their activities by using modern technology to commit terrorist acts. President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon said this at the opening of a high-level conference on international and regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which started in Dushanbe on Tuesday.

"Terrorist groups are abusing this situation and expanding extremist activities, attracting more and more young people, encouraging and committing terrorist attacks, including using information and communication technologies," the president said. He noted that "today, extremist organizations and groups are using the capabilities of advanced information technology to achieve their nefarious goals."

In this regard, the leader of Tajikistan pointed to the need "to develop <...> innovative approaches to jointly combat terrorism and the spread of ideology of extremism and religious radicalism, including the use of modern technology. Rahmon also noted that some media outlets provide their platforms for expressing the views of leaders of terrorist organizations. He called such an approach unconstructive and called for serious attention to be paid to this situation.

The conference in Dushanbe was co-organised by the UN Office for Counter-Terrorism, the government of Tajikistan, the Regional centre for preventive diplomacy for Central Asia, the OSCE and the EU.

It is expected to bring together ministers, representatives of UN member states, UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy structures, international and regional organizations, civil society institutions and border security experts. The conference is expected to result in the adoption of the Dushanbe Declaration on border security and management to combat terrorism and prevent the movement of terrorists.
