Raisi: Iran will support any diplomatic plan that leads to the lifting of sanctions

05 August 2021

The Iranian authorities will support any diplomatic plan that leads to the lifting of US sanctions against Tehran Ebrahim Raisi, the Islamic republic's new president, said on Thursday at his inauguration ceremony.

"Sanctions against the people of Iran must be lifted. Any diplomatic plan that leads to this goal will be supported by us," ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.

The president added that "Iran's nuclear program is absolutely peaceful." "The Islamic Republic in accordance with the fatwa [religious injunction] of Iran's spiritual leader [Ali Khamenei] forbids nuclear weapons, and this type of weapon has no place in the country's defense strategy," he said.

Talks between Iran and the international "five" (Russia, Britain, China, France and Germany) on the problem of restoring the Iranian nuclear agreement in its original form have been taking place in Vienna since April. The parties are discussing the removal of US sanctions against Iran, the fulfillment of Iran's nuclear obligations, and the return of the US to the deal. Representatives of the states participating in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action are also holding separate consultations with the US delegation without Iranian participation. Delegations originally expected to conclude their work in late May and then in early June.

Raisi took the oath of office as Iran's new president on Thursday at the country's Majlis (parliament). Some 115 representatives from more than 70 countries attended the inauguration ceremony. The Russian Federation was represented by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.
