Refugees from the village of Zara in Hama province in Syria, which was virtually destroyed by militants in 2016, are returning to their homes from the refugee camp in the locality of Homs, the representative of the Center for the Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria Andrei Dudkin told reporters.
"Today the refugee camp has been disbanded and residents are returning to their homes. The Reconciliation Center has made significant efforts to revive the village," Dudkin said, noting that authorities in Hama province have organized work to restore communal and social infrastructure.
According to him, 152 people who have been living in the refugee camp since 2016 will return to their home village. The military held a humanitarian campaign to distribute food packages to the villagers.
In May 2016, terrorists from the group Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in the Russian Federation) seized the village. At the time, witnesses reported that fighters were breaking into homes and ruthlessly killing women, children, and the elderly.
