Representatives of Russian CEC to travel as part of observation mission to Turkey

24 April 2023

Representatives of the Russian Central Election Commission (CEC) might be included in the observer mission for May 14 Turkish election, Russian Central Election Commission Chairperson Ella Pamfilova told reporters on Monday.

"We have very good relations with our Turkish colleagues in the electoral field, their head visited us many times. We always respond and offered our condolences in connection with the earthquake. Precisely because of the disaster they had, they have reduced opportunities, i.e. they will have only observers, a limited number from some international organizations, and not on the basis of bilateral contact. Maybe we will set up some kind of mission, <...> while this question is open," said Pamfilova.

She said that in the coming days she would go to Uzbekistan, where a referendum on the updated constitution will be held on April 30. "I will go in the coming days. <...> As an observer. I will definitely go, I promised to my Uzbek colleagues," Pamfilova said.

In Turkey, the presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on May 14. They involve 26 parties and 4 candidates for the highest state office. Incumbent head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the presidential candidate of the People's Alliance. His main opponent from the opposition will be the leader of the Republican People's Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who was nominated by the People's Alliance from the six opposition parties.
