Russia and Iran to discuss the Middle East settlement

10 July 2019

These days Russian President's Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev is visiting Tehran. He has already held negotiations with Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and Ali Asghar Khaji, Iranian Foreign Minister’s Senior Aide for Special Political Affairs.

During the meeting with Shamkhani, Lavrentiev stressed that without considering the role of the interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran, achieving effective and sustainable regional peace is impossible.

Iran, according to the Russian diplomat, is  "a powerful country in the region" and a friend and strategic partner for Russia.

Shamkhani, in his turn, hailed the increasing Iran-Russia cooperation and expressed his appreciation to Moscow for its decisive and fair stances on Iran-related issues.

Lavrentiev and Khaji held consultations on the situation in Syria, with both emphasizing the urgent need to launch the Syrian Constitutional Committee.
