Russia and Jordan Discuss Measures to Mitigate the Impact of Syrian Events on the Region

13 December

Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, met with Khaled Shawabkeh, Jordan’s Ambassador to Moscow, to discuss strategies for minimizing the negative effects of events in Syria on neighboring countries in the region.

“During the conversation, there was a thorough exchange of views on pressing Middle Eastern issues, with a focus on developments in Syria and the Palestinian territories,” the Russian foreign ministry stated. “The importance of efforts to reduce the adverse impact of these events on neighboring states, including Jordan, was emphasized.”

The ministry also noted that the two sides exchanged views on further advancing Russian-Jordanian cooperation. The meeting was initiated by the Jordanian ambassador.

Additionally, Ambassador Shawabkeh held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, during which they reviewed the situation in Gaza and the significant destabilization in Syria. Both parties stressed the need for coordinated action by the international community and the United Nations.

“Particular attention was given to the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which remains an irreplaceable organization for providing comprehensive support to millions of Palestinians,” the ministry concluded.
