Russia and Syria begin joint geologic exploration

26 December 2019

Syria, together with Russian companies, has begun exploration for oil and gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea. As the adviser to President Bashar al-Assad Bouthaina Shaaban reported the Lebanese TV channel al-Mayadeen, the preparation for this process was started by the Syrian authorities several years ago.

She did not name specific Russian companies that take part in geological exploration.

In 2013, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Syria signed a contract with the Russian Soyuzneftegaz to conduct research and exploration of oil and gas on the sea block number 2 in the territorial waters of Syria - between the cities of Tartus and Baniyas.
