15 April 2020

Russia and Syria call on the world community to exert pressure on the United States to lift sanctions against the Arab Republic in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, a joint statement by the head of the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mizintsev and the Minister of Municipal Administration and Ecology of Syria Hussein Makhluf reads.

The United States, as noted in the document, does not even take into account the relevant UN calls.

“In these circumstances, we call on the entire world community to provide the Syrian government with international support and put pressure on the United States and its allies to lift illegal and inhuman sanctions that are actually aimed at exterminating the population of an entire country," the statement said in particular.

Now in Syria, there is an acute shortage of coronavirus tests and mechanical ventilation devices, which was the result of significant damage suffered by the Syrian health system during the war.

Restoring the ability of the Arab Republic to fight coronavirus, as noted, can only be through foreign support, however, the supply of necessary medicines and medical equipment is impeded by the US sanctions.

In Syria, according to recent data, 29 cases of coronavirus infection were detected, two people died.
