14 November 2023

Russia has expressed high appreciation for Tajikistan's efforts in curbing drug supplies from neighboring Afghanistan and monitoring the situation in the region. The Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan, Semyon Grigoriyev, stated that Russia is prepared to explore new methods of countering threats in collaboration with Dushanbe within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

"We highly commend the efforts of the Tajik side in monitoring the situation in neighboring Afghanistan, their national endeavors to prevent the spread of extremist ideology, and their commitment to combat drug trafficking originating from Afghan territory. We are prepared to collaborate with Dushanbe on the SCO platform to develop new effective mechanisms to counter threats in this direction," expressed the ambassador during the round table discussion titled "The role of Emomali Rahmon in the formation and development of the SCO" held in Dushanbe.

The diplomat highlighted that the Russian Federation also endorses President Rakhmon's additional initiatives within the SCO. "I want to emphasize President Rahmon's statement from last year in Samarkand, where he emphasized that the Central Asian region should remain the nucleus of the SCO. Russia aligns with this perspective and, within the framework of allied relations with Tajikistan and other Central Asian nations, stands prepared to collaborate on addressing crucial issues within the organization for the benefit of the SCO member countries," he stated.

Grigoriyev added that the SCO economic development strategy until 2030, developed at the initiative of Tajikistan's president, holds particular significance. "Russia supports the approach outlined in this document towards the development of a green agenda within the SCO," affirmed the diplomat.

The roundtable convened at the Academy of Public Administration in Dushanbe on the eve of Tajikistan's annual President's Day, celebrated on November 16. The event was attended by ambassadors from SCO member and observer countries in Tajikistan, along with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic and the Academy's leadership.
