Russia and Turkey discussed the situation in Syria

Alexander Lavrentiev, the Russian President's Special Representative for the Syrian settlement, told the Turkish side during the "Astana" talks about the necessity to solve the issue of the territorial integrity of Syria.


According to him, all sides are interested in stabilizing the situation in Syria, which is why the guarantor countries of the "Astana" process (Iran, Russia, Turkey) talk about commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Syria.


"But as we see, there are difficulties, they have to be solved," Lavrentiev said during a meeting with a Turkish delegation led by Unal Selcuk, Director-General of bilateral political relations at the Turkish Foreign Ministry.


The Russian delegation led by Lavrentiev has already held bilateral talks with the delegations of the governments of Syria and Iran.


The head of the Iranian delegation, Ali Asghar Hadji, told reporters after talks with Lavrentiev that Moscow and Tehran's positions on developments in Syria were close.


On December 21, the "Astana" format negotiations on the settlement in Syria started in Nur-Sultan. Delegations from the guarantor countries - Iran, Russia and Turkey, as well as the Syrian government, the Syrian armed opposition and the UN - are taking part in the consultations, which will last for two days.
