Russia Backs Lebanon’s Complaint to UN Security Council on Israeli Bombings

17 October

Russia supports Lebanon's complaint to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) regarding Israel's bombing of civilian targets, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister told TASS.

"Of course [we support it]. We condemn these bombings ourselves because they are a violation of international law and an infringement on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Lebanese Republic," Bogdanov emphasized.

When asked whether Russia is prepared to push for an emergency UNSC meeting on the matter, Bogdanov indicated that Moscow is always in favor of discussing urgent international issues. "This is a special body responsible for international security," he noted.

Lebanon has previously filed multiple complaints with the UNSC over Israeli actions. On October 14, Lebanon raised concerns over Israeli attacks on positions of peacekeepers stationed along the Lebanese-Israeli border.

Israel launched the military operation "Northern Arrows" against Hezbollah forces in Lebanon on September 23, targeting military installations of the organization. The stated objective is to create safe conditions in Israel’s northern border regions, allowing the return of tens of thousands of residents. On October 1, the Israeli army announced a ground operation in the border areas of southern Lebanon.
