08 June 2020

Moscow expects that the authorities in Tripoli will respond quickly to the Cairo peace initiative on Libya,  a  comment from the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry reads.

On Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, and the head of the House of Representatives sitting in Eastern Libya, Aguila Saleh, in Cairo. After the meeting, the politicians spoke at a joint press conference, where the Egyptian leader announced the "Cairo initiative", which includes a cease-fire throughout Libya from June 8 and the terms of a political settlement.

"We hope that these comprehensive proposals agreed by the leaders of the East Libyan camp could become a solid basis for long-overdue negotiations between the warring Libyan parties on the post-conflict settlement of Libya. We hope that the authorities in Tripoli will respond promptly and with due attention to the peace appeal issued from Cairo and respond to it in a constructive manner," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that Moscow considers the Cairo initiative on Libya as a basis for starting a serious political process.
