26 June 2020

Russia is concerned about the escalation of tension in Yemen and calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately abandon the armed confrontation, according to a comment issued on Friday by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

As recalled in the Russian diplomatic service, on the night of June 22-23, the Houthi movement "Ansar Allah" fired missiles and drones at a number of objects on the territory of Saudi Arabia in the provinces of Najran and Jizan, as well as in the capital of the Kingdom of Riyadh. In turn, the forces of the "anti-Houthi coalition" led by Saudi Arabia only on June 23 and 24, had more than 80 air strikes on the territory of Yemen, the Ministry said.

"We call on all parties to the Yemeni conflict to immediately cease hostilities... We confirm our principled position on the need to quickly abandon the military confrontation in Yemen and establish an inclusive inter - Yemeni negotiation process under the auspices of the UN, which will take into account the interests of all the main political forces, religious and regional groups of the population of this country," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a comment.

The Ministry emphasizes the commitment to intensify mediation efforts to find political solutions, the success of which directly depends on reducing the level of confrontation and tension in and around Yemen.

In Yemen, since August 2014, the confrontation between government forces and the Houthis who seized power in the country has continued. Since March 2015, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE has been fighting with President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi on the side of the internationally recognized government. In response to the constant airstrikes on territories in the North of Yemen under the rule of the Houthis, the rebels are shelling the Saudi border areas with Yemen, in particular, airports and oil facilities.
