Russia calls on the US to punish responsible for war crimes in Afghanistan

13 March 2020

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova answered a question about the Russian side's attitude to the start of a full-scale investigation into war crimes in Afghanistan by the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

According to the diplomat, Russia has repeatedly claimed a large number of victims among the IRA's civilian population as a result of airstrikes by U.S. troops and international coalition forces.

"At the same time, we have not heard that the perpetrators of the death of civilians were punished as they deserve. We call on the United States and its allies to bring those responsible for war crimes to justice themselves, without waiting for the ICC's decisions. We are convinced that this would help reduce radical sentiments in the Afghan society and restore peace in this country as soon as possible", Zakharova said.

Earlier it became known that the international criminal court in the Hague decided to continue investigating alleged war crimes of the United States and its allies in Afghanistan, canceling its previous decision to suspend the investigation on this issue.
