Russia comments on US plans to restore UN sanctions against Iran

28 April 2020

The US claims of commitment to the Iran nuclear deal and parallel plans to restore the UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic are a manifestation of cynicism, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov wrote on Twitter.

"The US now claims that it remains a party to the JCPOA and therefore has the right under the UN Security Council resolution 2231 to launch a mechanism for restoring the UN sanctions against Iran. The fact that the US has long been out of the deal and is trying to break it up, they say, is not the point of the story. Cynicism is simply off the scale, " the Russian diplomat said, in particular.

Earlier, the New York Times reported that the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was working on a plan to extend the arms embargo against Tehran or resume tougher sanctions.

According to the publication, Washington intends to go this way if the UN Security Council refuses to extend the arms embargo on Tehran. Russia as noted, will almost certainly veto an attempt to renew the embargo, and China may do the same.

In response, according to the newspaper, the US will allegedly try to say that it formally remains a state party to the agreement, and Iran violates it, because it produces nuclear fuel in volumes exceeding those stipulated in the Treaty. It is assumed that after this, the US should resume more severe sanctions against Iran.
