Russia Deems Turkey's Potential New Military Operations in Syria Unacceptable

12 November

Moscow considers the possibility of new Turkish military operations in Syria unacceptable and hopes that Ankara will refrain from taking such steps, according to Alexander Lavrentiev, the Russian President’s Special Representative for Syrian settlement. He made the statement during a press conference following the 22nd international Astana-format meeting on Syria.

“The Russian Federation’s stance on Turkey’s potential new operations in Syria is clear: we do not accept them, and we have stated this repeatedly,” Lavrentiev emphasized. “We hope the Turkish side will avoid these actions, as they could have negative consequences within Syria itself.”

Lavrentiev argued that Turkey’s military actions would not resolve the situation but would instead exacerbate it. “These operations would have a destabilizing effect, especially given the ongoing crisis on the Lebanon-Israel border and in Gaza. Such actions could also be exploited by other groups operating in Syria’s Idlib de-escalation zone, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham,” he added, referring to a group designated as terrorist and banned in Russia.
