Russia discusses possible air defense supplies to the Middle East

20 February 2021

Rosoboroneksport is discussing with a number of Middle Eastern countries the possibility of supplying air defense equipment, Alexander Mikheyev, the director-general of the company (part of Rostec State Corporation), told TASS on the eve of the opening of the international arms exhibition IDEX 2021.

"Domestic air defense systems are well known in the Middle East and North Africa, including due to their successful combat use. Today we are discussing their supplies with a number of countries in the region, both separately and as part of the organization of a unified air defense system. The unique advantage of the Russian air defense and electronic warfare means is their ability to integrate into the existing national air defense systems without loss of combat effectiveness," Mikheev informed.

According to him, Rosoboronexport expects to pay attention to these air defense assets as part of the company's proposed integrated system for countering unmanned aerial vehicles. "This system consists of means of radio-electronic detection and suppression of UAVs, as well as systems of physical destruction of drones by missile and cannon weapons," Mikheyev said.

Development of weapons and military equipment

Mikheyev added that Rosoboronexport is working with Middle Eastern partners to develop weapons and military equipment.

"Rosoboronexport is currently running more than 100 joint projects with foreign partners to develop new advanced weapons and military equipment. Dozens of them are with the countries of the Middle East, including the UAE, a country with a high level of development of scientific and engineering thought," Mikheyev informed.

According to him, projects in the field of technological partnership with foreign customers are of significant interest to Rosoboronexport. "This is a means of strengthening bilateral cooperation at a qualitatively new level and mutual transfer of the scientific and technical base," Mikheyev said.

The IDEX 2021 international arms exhibition is the largest in the Middle East region. This year it will be held in the United Arab Emirates from February 21 to 25.
