Russia Emphasizes Key Role of UN Security Council in Gaza Peace Talks

04 April

Russia believes the UN Security Council must play a central role in efforts to achieve a sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This position was voiced by Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, during a Security Council session on the Middle East.

He stressed the need for “an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and safe, unhindered access for humanitarian aid.” According to Polyanskiy, any agreement reached must be durable, and history shows that without international guarantees, ceasefires can collapse overnight. Therefore, he argued, the UN Security Council must ensure both the negotiation process and compliance with its outcomes.

He also reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to the two-state solution, emphasizing the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, and called on international mediators to prioritize reviving peaceful dialogue.
