Russia Favors Resolving Yemen Conflict Through Regional Mediators

27 August

Russia supports the resumption of mediation efforts by Middle Eastern countries and the United Nations to resolve the conflict in Yemen, as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a press conference following talks with Yemeni Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsen al-Zindani.

Lavrov expressed Russia's endorsement of renewed mediation by Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and the UN's Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, to steer the situation in Yemen back towards a political and diplomatic resolution.

He highlighted the significant threat posed by attacks from the Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement in northern Yemen on ships in the Red Sea, which endangers global shipping. However, Lavrov cautioned against Western countries' decisions to respond militarily to the actions of the Houthis, arguing that such measures only worsen the situation in Yemen.

The conflict in Yemen has persisted since August 2014, with the Ansar Allah (Houthi) rebel movement opposing government forces. The conflict escalated dramatically in March 2015 when a coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened. The ongoing civil war has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, with the UN reporting that more than 24 million Yemenis—about 80% of the population—are in need of humanitarian aid, and the number of internally displaced persons exceeds 4 million.
