The maintenance of UN sanctions against Guinea-Bissau is absurd in a situation when the world organization itself has found it possible to close its peacebuilding office there, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said on Thursday at a Security Council meeting on West Africa.
"After the closure of the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau in 2020, the monitoring of events in that country became the responsibility of UNOWAS (UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel - TASS)," he said. - "Under these circumstances, we believe that it is absurd to maintain Security Council sanctions on Bissau, in other words, measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, provided only when there are threats to international peace and security".
"We call to start their gradual dismantling," the Russian diplomat pointed out.
The UN Security Council imposed sanctions on Guinea-Bissau in 2012 after the military coup. They include restrictions on the travel of a number of representatives of the country's leadership to UN member states.
