Russia intends to strengthen coordination with Egypt in regional affairs

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev stressed at a meeting with Egyptian counterparts on Wednesday that Moscow views Cairo as one of its most important partners in the Middle East and North Africa and intends to strengthen cooperation with it in regional affairs, the press service of the Security Council of the Russian Federation reported.


"Summarizing the Russian-Egyptian consultations on security, Nikolai Patrushev noted that Russia considers Egypt as the most important partner in the Middle East and North Africa, emphasizing the closeness of the approaches of Russia and the Arab Republic of Egypt on key issues of the international agenda," the report said.


The Security Council also "expressed Russia's readiness to continue active cooperation and strengthening coordination with Cairo in regional affairs". According to the Security Council secretary, this year the states managed to make significant progress in a number of crucial areas. "In particular, the entry into force of the Treaty on Comprehensive Partnership and Strategic Cooperation has opened up new opportunities to intensify work on the entire spectrum of bilateral relations," the report explains.


The sides discussed issues of Russian-Egyptian cooperation in the sphere of counter-terrorism, problems of information security, interaction through military departments and special services, as well as some joint trade and economic projects. Representatives of a number of ministries and departments of the two countries also took part in the talks.


Russian-Egyptian security consultations were held in Moscow on Wednesday. Patrushev held them with Fayza Abu al-Naga, National Security Advisor to the Egyptian president, and Magdy Abdel Ghaffar, Counterterrorism Advisor to the Egyptian president.


Previous such consultations took place in 2019 during Patrushev's working trip to Cairo.
