The issue of evacuating the Russian Embassy in Kabul due to the occupation of Afghanistan's largest cities, Kandahar and Herat, by the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) is not considered, Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Director of the Second Asia Department of the Foreign Ministry, told TASS on Friday.
"No, it is not considered," he said. According to Kabulov, the Taliban have "no possibility of capturing Kabul in the foreseeable future."
He also noted that Kabul's delaying peace talks with the Taliban has led to a deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan.
The diplomat positively assessed his contacts with representatives of the Qatari Taliban political office in Doha the day before.
"But it's one thing to negotiate, and another thing to implement it. And that depends not only on the Taliban, but also on the current Kabul government, which finally has to get its head together and start meaningful negotiations. They've dragged out the time to what we've got," he stressed.
A series of meetings on the Afghan settlement took place in Doha on Tuesday. Participants discussed prospects for a peaceful settlement amid a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan caused by clashes between government forces and the Taliban. Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of Afghanistan's High National Reconciliation Council, led the Kabul delegation. The meeting in Doha was attended by special representatives of Russia, the US, China and Pakistan.
