Russia is working on the possibility of evacuating the second group of its compatriots from the Gaza Strip

26 May 2021

The possibility of evacuating the second group of Russian citizens from the Gaza Strip is being worked out, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a briefing on Wednesday.

The first group of citizens "who have expressed their desire to leave the Strip has already been taken to Egypt, 64 people in total," she said. "The humanitarian situation in Gaza, which sharply worsened as a result of another Palestinian-Israeli armed confrontation, remains extremely difficult, and in this connection, the Russian representative office to the Palestinian National Authority and the Russian embassy in Egypt are working on the possibility of evacuating the second group of our compatriots from there," Zakharova noted.

Zakharova recalled that on May 26 morning, in compliance with an order of the Russian president, the evacuation of Russian citizens living in Gaza started. "Currently, our citizens are on their way to the international airport in Cairo, where a plane of the Ministry of Emergency is waiting for them, and from there they can return to Moscow," the diplomat pointed out.
