Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan continue to discuss creating "triple gas union"

24 May 2023

Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan keep on discussing projects within the "triple gas union" that implies delivery of Russian gas through the territories of these countries, Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov told reporters.

"Under discussion," he said.

Last November, Russia proposed that Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan create a "triple gas union" to coordinate the commercial interests of the three states in this area. In January 2023, the Uzbek and Kazakh energy ministries signed a cooperation plan with Gazprom.

In April this year, Uzbek Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov said that therefore are plans to supply gas to Uzbekistan from Russia through the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline.

At the same time, the Kazakh authorities are discussing the issue of transit of Russian gas through their territory to Uzbekistan.

Negotiations on the possible construction of a gas pipeline from Russia to China are also in progress.
