Russia refused to use "Balkhash" radar in Kazakhstan

22 June 2020

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin supported the proposal to denounce an agreement with Kazakhstan on the use of the Balkhash radar in the Russian Missile Attack Warning System. The relevant decree was published on the official legal information portal.

"To approve the proposal on denunciation of the agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the terms of transfer and the procedure for further use of the Kazakh Balkhash hub in the Russian Missile Attack Warning System, signed in Moscow on 2 December 2014," the document says.

Kazakhstan's Balkhash unit includes the Dnepr radar, which is used in the Russian early warning and space surveillance systems.

So far, Russia has put into operation a new radar Voronezh-M near Orsk, which replaced the station in Kazakhstan.
