Russia requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council because of the US appeal on anti-Iranian sanctions

21 August 2020

Russia demanded an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on August 21 because of the US request for restoring of anti-Iranian sanctions, the First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky told on Thursday.

"In connection with the latest developments around the implementation of resolution 2231, Russia requested an open meeting in the morning of August 21," he said.

In early August, the US, again accusing Iran of violating the nuclear deal, announced its intention to restore UN sanctions against Tehran under the procedure provided for by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which Washington withdrew in 2018. On August 20, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo personally transmitted Washington's request to the UN Security Council President.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously stated that the US initiative is illegal and "will inevitably fail".
