Russia says it will continue to assist Niger in military training

09 November 2021

The Russian Federation will continue to provide assistance to Niger in improving the combat efficiency of its Armed Forces and training military and law enforcement officers. This was stated in a comment by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in connection with the terrorist attack in Niger.

"Russia stands in solidarity with the Nigerian people's fight against the terrorist threat and will continue providing assistance to Niger in improving the combat efficiency of the armed forces, training of servicemen and law-enforcement officers," the commentary said.

Terrorists attacked a convoy of residents of several villages in the Tillaberi area on November 2. They killed 69 people, including the mayor of Banibangu commune. The Tillaberi area is located in a strategically important region where the borders of three countries - Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso - converge. In this part of Africa, there are units of the extremist terrorist group Islamic State in West Africa, which is a structure of the Islamic State (banned in the Russian Federation). A state of emergency has been in effect in the Tillaberi region since 2017.

"We strongly condemn the extremists' bloody outing. We express our condolences to the families and friends of those killed and wish the wounded a speedy recovery," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a document distributed on Monday.
