Russia scrambled fighter jets to intercept two US B-52 bombers flying over the Sea of Okhotsk, the National defense control center said in a statement.
"On June 19, the Air defense forces of the Eastern military district on duty over neutral waters <...> detected and escorted a pair of B-52N bombers of the US air force," the release said.
Su-30, Su-35 and MiG-31 fighters took to the sky.
It is emphasized that the state border was not violated, and Russian flights were performed "in strict accordance with international rules".
Over the past week and a half, the US air force itself has twice flown fighter jets to escort Russian Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers in the same area.
Earlier the chief of the Main operations Directorate of the General staff Colonel-General Sergey Rudskoy said that the Ministry of Defense recorded a high level of military activity of the US and its NATO allies near Russia's borders.
According to him, the military will continue to monitor what is happening "for timely action."
