Russia has started printing new banknotes for Yemen, doing so in accordance with a previously concluded contract, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry was asked to comment on media reports about the detention by separatists in Yemen of a convoy carrying 64 billion Rials in banknotes printed for the Central Bank of Yemen in Russia.

"According to the information we receive, the incident actually took place in the capital of the Yemeni South, the city of Aden. We can also confirm that in accordance with the contract that was signed with the official Yemeni authorities in 2017, Goznak JSC prints new banknotes for this country, "she said.

"We are talking about an exclusively commercial deal, under which the Russian company, as we understand it, fulfills its obligations with high professionalism, quality and on time," she added.

Goznak supplies its products and services to more than 20 countries. In different years, the company has won tenders for printing banknotes not only for Yemen, but also for countries such as Madagascar, Colombia, Rwanda, Indonesia, and Laos.
