Russia supports dialogue between Kurds and Damascus on the future of Syria

09 July 2020

Moscow supports a dialogue between the Kurds and Damascus about the future development of Syria,  Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

As Zakharova stressed at a briefing on Thursday, for centuries, Syria had been a country where various ethnic and religious groups had coexisted peacefully and successfully.

"We are convinced that such historical traditions should be fully preserved and continued. We believe that the Syrian Kurds are an integral part of the people of Syria. Based on this principled position, Moscow supports the dialogue that is being held between the Kurds and Damascus about the future development of their common homeland," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

She added that Syrians should determine for themselves what their country would be like so that all its population, regardless of their religious or ethnic affiliation, would feel safe and secure.
