Russia supports UN call to lift sanctions in the face of a pandemic

30 March 2020

The group of states in defense of the UN Charter, which, along with Russia, includes Venezuela, Iran, China, North Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua and Syria, sent a collective appeal to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanding the complete and immediate lifting of unilateral sanctions that hinder the efforts of states to effectively combat the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Russia, as the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry notes, consistently opposes the use of unilateral restrictions that run counter to the norms of international law and cause significant damage to the socio-economic development of states.

"We believe that in the conditions of the rapid spread of infection, the issue of removing such barriers becomes particularly relevant, including in order to provide the countries affected by the restrictions with the necessary medical supplies", the statement reads.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres himself repeatedly stated the need to lift sanctions that hinder the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
