Russia to increase trade and economic ties with Asian countries amid sanctions

25 February 2022

Russia will build up trade and economic relations with Asian countries in the face of external sanctions pressure. The development of integration processes in the EEU is also becoming a key task, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development told reporters.

"We understand that the sanctions pressure, which we have faced since 2014, will now intensify. <...> Moreover, they (sanctions - TASS) come from those countries that have already imposed restrictive measures against us. Therefore, we will build up trade and economic ties with other countries, especially with Asian countries. The Eurasian Economic Union has a huge potential that has not yet been fully disclosed - we will continue to develop all-round integration," the Ministry of Economic Development reported.

The Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation is also considering additional measures to reduce the impact of sanctions. "We have been living under sanctions for a long time, we adapted to them and found effective responses that simultaneously helped us to strengthen our economy. The country's economic development and responses to challenges, including restrictive measures, are part of the government's systemic work. <...> The Ministry of Economic Development of Russia together with the agencies concerned is considering additional measures that will help to reduce the impact of sanctions," the ministry said.
The MED stressed that Russia had long started to prepare for potential new sanctions due to the rhetoric of "some foreign colleagues".
