Russia to request a meeting of the UN Security Council on the occupied US oil installations in Syria

30 July 2020

Russia intends to request a special meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the environmental damage that the US is causing to the territory of Syria in the area of illegally occupied oil fields. This was stated at a meeting of the Security Council by Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia.

"We will request a separate meeting, we are forced to do so by your unwillingness to request a separate report on this topic at this meeting," Nebenzia addressed the Chairman of the Security Council in July, German Ambassador Christoph Heusgen. "We are talking about a foreign state that controls the territories [of Syria], and they are being harmed by the environment," Nebenzia said. "Reliable Western media write about this situation, and we want to get a report [from the UN] on what is happening in the illegally occupied territories in the North-East of Syria."

In turn, Heusgen explained the reluctance to provide a rapporteur on the situation in the North-East by the fact that the request from Russia was received less than 24 hours before the start of the monthly meeting on the humanitarian situation in Syria. He also expressed the opinion that such interest in this topic on the part of Russia "may be related to the oil spill in Norilsk".

The US Ambassador to the UN, Kelly Craft, did not respond to the accusations regarding the occupation of oil facilities, but expressed criticism of Russia and Iran. "We spent billions of dollars to help Syrians get out of the terrible situation that the regime of [Syrian President Bashar] forced them into. Russia and Iran have blood on their hands, " she said.
