Russia urged the UN Security Council mission to visit the region of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

28 August 2019

To restart the dialogue between Israel and Palestine, a UN Security Council mission should visit the conflict region, Russian Acting Permanent Representative at the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy said during the meeting on Palestinian-Israeli issues.

According to the diplomat, the relevance of sending UN Security Council missions to Israel and Palestine is long overdue. It could " increase confidence and facilitate the restart of negotiations between the parties, prevent the failure of the efforts made by the international community to ensure the conditions for the implementation of the only viable settlement on the international legal basis".

Polyanskiy also recalled that it was the UN Security Council that developed the basis for the settlement of the long-standing conflict, and stressed that "no unilateral steps can replace the key principles of the two states, the Madrid principles, the Arab peace initiative, as well as the status of the occupied territories, including the Syrian Golan".
