Russia urged the West to step up efforts to preserve the "nuclear deal" with Iran

23 June 2020

Moscow is calling on Berlin, London and Paris to step up efforts to preserve the deal before the fifth anniversary of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program (JCPOA), the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

This is how the official representative of the Ministry Maria Zakharova commented on the statement of the Foreign Ministers of Freat Britain, Germany and France on the prospects for implementing the JCPOA, published on June 19.

"Certain provisions of this statement cannot but raise questions about the future intentions of European colleagues in this direction," Zakharova said.

She noted that Moscow has always "paid tribute to the meaningful efforts and concrete contribution of France, Germany and the UK in solving the tasks we all face to preserve and implement the JCPOA without interruption."

"The root cause of all the difficulties and failures in the implementation of the "nuclear deal" with Iran was and remains the subversive actions of the United States, which unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA and to this day continue to systematically violate the requirements of UN Security Council Resolution 2231. Apparently, this is also understood in European capitals, since they found it necessary to recall their regrets and concerns in this regard. At the same time, the assurances of British, German and French colleagues in their commitment to the JCPOA and the search for solutions to reduce the negative impact of US sanctions against Iran do not fit with their actions to escalate tensions over the Iranian nuclear program in the IAEA, as well as speculation about the launch of the "to initiate dispute resolution mechanism" provided for in paragraph 36 of the JCPOA," the Russian Foreign Ministry comments.

Zakharova recalled that "European colleagues unsuccessfully tried to activate" the so-called dispute resolution mechanism in January this year.

"However, the "watches" was never turned on due to numerous procedural gaps that were discovered. The joint commission did not meet on this issue. As a result, no decisions on the launch could be made, and there is no way out of this procedural impasse," she said.

"We hope that Berlin, London and Paris will take the lead in maintaining the JCPOA and returning the process of its implementation to the originally agreed framework. We believe it is important that all current participants confirm their continued commitment to the high goals set in the JCPOA. A good reason for this is the upcoming July 14 five-year anniversary of the conclusion of the JCPOA. We call on the European participants of comprehensive agreements to use this opportunity to return to the unifying agenda and continue the fight for a common cause", Zakharova stressed.
