Russian Ambassador in Tehran talks on military products

23 August 2021

After the UN arms embargo was lifted, Russia and Iran are engaged in a dialogue on the entire range of military products, Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan told RIA Novosti.

"Military-technical cooperation with Iran has a rather long history of more than 50 years. It develops on a mutually beneficial basis in strict compliance with Russia's international obligations in the arms trade. Considering the cancellation of known restrictions, Russia is conducting a constructive dialogue with Iranian partners about the whole range of military products," the ambassador said.

Earlier President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia and Iran had plans for cooperation in the military and technical sphere as well. Dmitry Shugaev, FSMTC Director, said that Iran was interested in a variety of Russian arms.

Starting from October 18, 2020, Teheran obtained the possibility to sell and buy armament as before the permission procedure of armament supply to Iran regulated by the nuclear deal was effective. The Iranian Defense Ministry stated that the country would sell military products rather than buy them.

Russia, Iran and China will hold joint naval exercises in the Persian Gulf region in late 2021 or early 2022, Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan told RIA Novosti.

"The annual joint naval exercise CHIRU will take place in the Persian Gulf region at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. Combat ships of Russia, Iran and China will take part in it. The main goal is to practice the security of international navigation and fight against sea pirates," Dzhagaryan said.

He added that preparations for the "Glubina" ("Depth") competition, which takes place within the framework of the Army-2021 International Games in the city of Chabahar, are currently being finalized.

"Along with Russia and Iran, China, India, Syria and Venezuela will take part in it. Diving teams of the armed forces of these countries are scheduled to compete. Representatives of the command of the Navy of the Russian Federation will attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the competition," the ambassador said.
