Russian Ambassador Notes Stabilization in Burkina Faso Following Attempted Coup

28 September 2023

The situation in Burkina Faso has returned to normalcy following the recent coup attempt, according to Russian Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, Alexei Saltykov.

Saltykov reported, "Currently, the situation in Ouagadougou, the capital, is normal, and the city is resuming its usual activities. In Bobo-Dioulasso, the second-largest city, life has also returned to normal. Some smaller towns briefly faced disruptions as locals awaited confirmation about the president's well-being. However, President Ibrahim Traoré reassured the public through a social network statement, confirming his safety and expressing gratitude to the Burkinabe people for their active civic engagement."

He further mentioned that the Russian embassy had not received any alarming reports from Russian citizens residing in Burkina Faso, stating, "No alarming incidents have been reported regarding our compatriots. There have been no indications of danger to our citizens."

Saltykov emphasized that the embassy continues to closely monitor the situation in Burkina Faso due to the overall instability in the region and the possibility of provocations from certain countries. He stated, "We are closely monitoring the situation, given the general instability in this region and the potential for provocations originating from certain countries."
