Russian ambassador says Putin plans to attend G20 summit in Indonesia

23 March 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the final summit of the Group of Twenty (G20), Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Lyudmila Vorobieva said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"It will depend on many things, including the situation with the coronavirus pandemic. At the moment, Vladimir Putin's intention is to attend the summit. He wishes to come," Lyudmila Vorobieva reported.

"Indeed, the G20 is not a forum for discussing or solving this kind of crisis (the situation in Ukraine - TASS). In fact, the forum is aimed at improving the economic situation and solving economic problems," Lyudmila Vorobieva added. According to her, Russia's exclusion from the G20 would make it difficult to solve the economic problems of the G20 members.

Earlier, on March 14, Indonesia informed that as G20 chair, it does not intend to include the crisis in Ukraine in the current agenda, instead focusing on the topics identified as priorities at the end of last year. President Joko Widodo plans to hold the final summit on October 30-31 in Bali in a face-to-face format.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine in response to a request for help from the leaders of the Donbass republics. He stressed that Moscow's plans did not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories. On March 15, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said that there was an ongoing discussion about the possibility of Poland replacing Russia in the G20. On March 17, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that she considered it pointless and unreasonable to comment on hypothetical statements about Russia's possible exclusion from the G20.
