18 May 2020

Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan denied claims that the Russian side is dissatisfied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, This, according to TASS, the diplomat said in an interview with the Iranian Mehr news Agency.

"As you know, there is some speculation that Russia is dissatisfied with Assad. But these are private statements that do not reflect the official position of the Russian state," the Ambassador said, adding that "Russia will continue to support the political process in Syria and the legitimate government of this country."

The future of Syria, as Dzhagaryan stressed, "belongs to its people, and only they can make decisions about their country."

"I would also like to express support for the efforts of the guarantor states of the Astana process: Russia, Turkey, and Iran. Thanks to our trilateral efforts, we were able to stop military operations and start negotiations, " he said.

Earlier, a number of media reported that Bashar al-Assad may soon be removed from power. The issue,  according to the Syrian opposition, is currently being discussed by Russia, Turkey, and Iran. None of the states officially confirmed this information.

Moscow and Tehran, along with Ankara, are the guarantors of the Astana process to normalize the situation in Syria. The last round of negotiations in this format took place on December 10-11, 2019 in Nur-Sultan. The next meeting was scheduled for March, but it was postponed.
